Stylized Birds Embroidered Napkin Set from The Met Museum

The golden designs embellishing our linen napkins recall the celestial ornamentation on an Indonesian ceremonial mat, or lampit (late 19th-early 20th century), in The Met collection. Such refined mats were woven from finely split cane fibers and adorned with burnt patterns made with a heated stylus. Reserved for spiritual leaders who presided over important ritual gatherings, the mat features crescent moons and birds in flight to suggest the timeless relationship between Indonesia’s elite rulers and the universe’s cosmic order.
