Our head-turning picture frame earring nods to Portrait of Lady (1813), an oval portrait in watercolor on ivory by William P. Sheys (American, active 1813-21). This portrait of a young woman in profile seems to correspond with Sheys’s later Portrait of a Gentleman (1821), created in the same medium and also in The Met collection.
